Reader Wayne Conklin has built a fleet of boats. He writes:
My inspiration for boat building began in June 1956 when my father Carlton built a boat in his farm workshop. …
Fast forward to 2010 when I decided to build a Glen-L Tug Along 18…since then I have built three other boats. A Dianne’s Rose by Roy Schreyer, a 9-foot dingy by Richard Jackson, and a modified Perfect 10 by Berkeley Eastman called The Carlton A. After my father..
I’m currently building the Osprey by Roy Scheyer. I will be donating this build to the Florida ACBS, Sunnyland Chapter, to be sold to provide additional funds to promote their youth boatbuilding program called Scampy.
A friend asked reader Rich Green if he could help with a unique project. Not a boat, but some of the same skills required…
Nathan Levin continues to make good progress on his Setka Transat boat.
Steve Zicree reports a successful launch of his new build:
Here’s a pic of my just finished Oughtred Gannet. Meranti ply, Doug Fir keelson and spars, and pretty much Sapele everything else. Took five years to build from Iain’s plans, but I’ve got kids and a job. I communicated several times with Iain during the build and he was always so very generous and helpful. She sails wonderfully with a very balanced helm.
Larry Fullerton reports: the Calvert Marine Museum’s Patuxent Small Craft Guild recently completed a Rangeley 17 cedar strip lake boat, and we have a traditionally built Chaisson dory in progress.
And finally, in January Peter Van Sickle began to build a Poulsbo Boat:
This was traditionally built with carvel planking with steamed ribs. I have a supply of cedar I cut from a tree in my own yard when our house was constructed. It was not cut to make efficient use by cutting into the design plank thickness of 9/16th.of an inch. I decided I could do better by stripe planking using 7/16" and fiberglassing inside and out. I now have the hull planked and the outside glassed with one coat of epoxy.
Nice work everyone! We’ll check-in for reports on other projects soon. —Eds
