Could the author further describe the use situation? One would assume this lifting is not to just shift the motor up and out of the water on its mount while sailing, but to also allow removal of the engine while preparing to travel with the craft on the trailer...seeing those operations would be cool!
Hi Eddie. When trailering the boat the engine is mounted on a plate at the front of the trailer. I use the block and tackle to lift the engine up while sailing. I find bending over the transom and pulling up the heavy engine too arduous. Could my rig be used to take some sheer strain off the transom while trailering? Yes, I believe it would obviate the need to move the engine to the front, in fact. However, I haven't tried that
Can you lift it with your system to remove it from the mount so you can carry it to the trailer mount? My 6HP Yamaha is hard to get on/off my rowboat on the trailer in the driveway! Thanks for the follow-up!
Yes, I can. Of course I have to lower it first, but that's easy with my block and tackles rig. Once the engine mount is in the lowered position, I can unclip the pelican hook from the engine, unwind the two clamps that hold the engine to the plastic mount plate, and physically lift off the engine and move it to the front of the trailer. It is heavier than I find comfortable, but I haven't wanted to risk tearing out my transom when trailering. I wish the engine was lighter, but it isn't, and I can't stand the two-stroke racket, smoke, or fuel inefficiency...so it's a 4 stroke. If I were ONLY using an engine to maneuver in and out of a dock, I would go 55lb thrust electric. Cheaper, and easier in every way. However, I sometimes "motor sail" and use the engine for extended periods, so it has to be gasoline.
