In the early 70s I had an Eldon Racing sloop. Plastic hull and deck, cloth sails and wood dowel boom and mast. It would probably sail but not in our above ground pool. It spent most of it's time avoiding the blast effects of 16" battleship shells simulated by my brothers and I doing cannonballs close to it. Right now there's three of them in various conditions on Ebay.

I had a plastic toy boat that I sailed on the edge of the Welsh Harp reservoir aged 4. It definitely inspired me

And now how about a profile of the good ones, from soap powered speedsters to rubber band paddlewheelers to little wood boats that do sail, or the shirt cardboard Viking ships i built endlessly (got a few to plane, and they do make a flaming spectacle at midnight on new years eve!). Cause you are right, the kids deserve better than the mass market monstrosities- and there are so many great ones to get them going with!

As someone who favors traditional sails, I would point out that none of these have four sided sails such as lugsails, sprit sails or square sails. Just saying...

Yet another reason they've failed us...

Humm, that red boat bears a striking resemblance to a West Wight Potter 14. Need I be concerned?

Apparently Josh, some people just have too much time on their hands!!

It concerns me that you don't see this as a pressing issue.

I am duly chastised and will put myself in the brig for the rest of the voyage.
