A ripper yarn. Nick! Most NSW sailors would be familiar with your plight. I had a similar experience in 2013 leaving Port Stephens on a 25m schooner, with a skipper of the same attitude as yours. We, too, had great difficulty furling the main with the press of wind on the sail.
