I’m pleased that John still practices his signature cunning and guile. He’s been nurturing these qualities for a long time!

John's article is a pleasure, with one exception: What is currently called a jib is really a staysail. L. Francis Herreschoff had it right. A staysail rides on a stay and a jib is set free, only attached at its head, tack and clew. Although nearly everyone calls it a jib does not mean they are correct. OK, so I am a pedant.

I agree with you on "jib" versus "staysail," and I try to observe that convention whenever two jibs are present. I think that for the purposes of the article, it was just too far down the rabbit hole!

These are all lovely boats! I think it interesting that the two Autumn Leaves boats perform so similarly. Were I too choose between the two I think I'd opt for the simple to rig lug yawl. I'm not a string puller.

Now a comment on what the rigs are called. Perhaps I made this up, but I've always understood a mast head rig to be one with a jib that extends to the top of the mast. I could be all wet on this... I'm sure that someone will let me know! So, that, and I'm going to continue to refer to that sail shape as a marconi or bermuda. I've called it that for too many years and I'm not changing!

fractional marconi yawl? It would be tough to choose. Love a little more cabin with one less line, or the beautiful lines of the fractional marconi yawl.... best stick with what I have
