I got tipped off to an option that I think works quite well, is super simple, and free (for us oldsters).
Audio cassette tape. Just grab that old Credence tape you haven't needed to use for two decades and tear off a strip. Tie it off to any handy protuberance.
Light and immune to moisture. Slides and swivels perfectly.
I tried cassette tape. Tied pieces to the shrouds. It works well... until it doesn't. The UV light breaks down the material and makes it brittle. Then the length breaks off and goes into the drink. Not good for sailing and especially not good for the environment. I went back to cotton yarn. It works just fine.
Yes an excellent idea. I would try it but I don’t want to part with my last Dark Side of the Moon cassette, and I’m all out of the self help ones (they really didn’t work). :)

John, adding a jib AND telltales to my boat so I tell wind direction would cost way more than $45! Do not make me sent Captain Teague over to have a discussion about the Code. :)
I love playing with "seeing the wind". Some racers have used cigar smoke or a childs bubble gun for light winds. Yes I have an old cassette tape in my gear bag! I tape it to my oar posts. I have a Schaefer Little Hawk MK2 for my Force5 and also afix it atop my ILUR mast. The rectangular "tail" on the Schaefer helps me see it's angle better with my one eye. To windward in my ILUR, looking up, there is a near parralell aspect of the windex to the Yard - makes for a sweet association for adjustments hard on the wind. Thanks for the great ideas/images!!! R

Works great for me!

I do love a good Rube Goldberg design project. Mine or someone else's.
I swear by the SailZing StayTales - easily adapted for your purposes.

Exactly at this point. LMAO.
Best wind indicator is a jib with telltales. Happens to make the boat point higher as well.

Clever. And cheeky.
a subject near and dear to my heart.
