For a moat there are few better than Herstmonceaux Castle in southern England. It was bequeathed to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario for an overseas campus.
Having grown up on Long Island NY and sailed the many of the waters of the NYC area I find it unfair that the 18 “Other” waterways are not included in the total which should be 48, not 30. In the region we have “Other” waterways including the Sound, Kills, inlets, tidal estuaries, & tidal straits.
Interestingly, the East River separating Manhattan from Long Island is considered a tidal estuary/tidal strait according to the Supreme Court of the US. In the 1980’s the court ruled that Long Island is not a natural island but is a peninsula off the mainland because the East River is not a river but a tidal estuary made navigable from widening by man. This was to settle a case on whether the surrounding states or the federal government controlled the Long Island Sound. By making Long Island a peninsula the states could control the Long Island Sound
Obviously, of the 11 I have sailed not all were sailboats. The ocean and harbor was on a ship, the streams were in a canoe, the pond in a kayak and in a very very small sailboat. I have done rivers in powerboats, and sailboats . My earliest recollections of being on the water was going fishing with my father in a row boat on Lake James in North Carolina (I went fishing, not once did I go catching!) at the age of 7 or 8. I don't know if I have ever even seen a moat. That must have been exciting
We'll expect moat photos to follow ;-)
Yup, it took a bit of thinking but yes, all of those. If its water, it will float a boat
Missing one of my favorites: a slough.
Apologies for the slough slight.
