Our friend Hugh Horton forwarded this info about small-boat legend and designer, Jim Brown:
Today, June 7, marks the 90th birthday of sailor, multi-hull pioneer and free spirit Jim Brown. Along with the normal celebrations, we are marking the day with a new website: JimBrownBeyondMainstream.com
Many of you were curious to know more about a particular boat pictured in our Photo Flood 6. We asked owner Scott Henderson for more details and photos:
From reader Tony Davis: I believe I‘ve sailed most small boats ever made. My question is why nobody ever talks about this boat—the Guppy 13. Built like a Mack Truck! Yes, surely not my Westsail 32, but no small boat would ever have gone where this one went! Yes I added a wing to the keel to get better pointing, but that’s it. I took it over 2,000 miles in the Sea of Cortez—sometimes with 10-foot wavesand never once lost control.
Here’s a reader survey suggested by Mike Smith. It’s true confessions time. Have you been faithful to the first boat you fell in love with? —Eds
I'm at 4 not counting the windsurfer..ha! Nothing above 17 feet now. Only thing I've given up permanently is white sails~ _/)
I built Welsford's Walkabout 13 years ago, have temporarily owned smaller boats and thought about bigger boats but this one is the best compromise for so many missions. If anything ever happened to it I would probably start building a Long Steps, the somewhat bigger cousin.
