Way better than tiller clutch or tiller tamer is the “helm impeder” from the British Dinghy Cruising Association, 2008. Easily assembled and with easily adjustable tensioning. See it on you tube; search for “Huntingford helm impeder” posted by Nick Crabbe. Cost is less than $20, but you probably have the stuff already laying about. I’ve used this on 16’ day sailors and dinghies. All these devices stabilize the rudder but don’t maintain a particular course like the electric tiller pilots.
I have used a “CanSail” tiller tamer for many years on my M17 and numerous M15’s….sadly I think this Canadian business folded.
