I’ve been thinking about ChatGPT and its competitors from Google and Microsoft. In fact I did a post/rant on facebook and LinkedIn about them.
Because all these tools use machine learning and rely on databases of existing content, think about what will happen if/when more and more content providers of all sorts utilize ChatGPT and publish straight to the net without editorial oversight. Over time, the net will become more and more populated with stuff that sounds reasonable at first glance but is clearly nonsense to anyone that can actually think. The ChatGPTs and their ilk will be then referring back to an ever-increasing fraction of the database populated with the nonsense they just generated, and perpetuating it in a recursive loop, with no ability to discriminate. With the speed of these tools, I can foresee a time when publishing content from them will be automated, and the net will mostly be eventually filled with nonsense, and original content will be a vanishingly small fraction.
I think it will happen at an accelerating pace and become a kind of singularity of meaninglessness .
Hey, c'mon Marty, the AI did far better than the average landlubber! I've had far less cogent conversations with actual human beings at ramps all over the east coast ;-p
Goes to prove that AI can't hold a candle to the Frankenboat mentality of the average small-boat builder or sailor. I think I'll go paddle my Hunter 17 around for awhile before crawling into the cabin for bed.
Before long all we will need to do is insert electrodes where appropriate and download sailing experiences directly into our brains. No need to pay dock fees or worry about heavy weather or falling overboard because you might be a klutz! Its coming folks, its coming.
Norman - Let’s all keep “real-life boating” as long as we can manage to fall into our small boats, sail away and crawl back onto the dock when finished. We should resist virtual lives as long as we can! - Marty
The ChatGPT is relying on information obtained on the Internet, principally Google and Bing. Shows us how much incorrect information is out there about small boats. By correcting the Chattie on SCA you are actually teaching it. Also, it may be assuming that the famous sailors once had small boats as children :)
As for the question "Why do sailors love small boats?" the best answer is a paraphrase of the Small Craft Advisor motto, "The smaller the boat, the bigger the adventure!" :-)
I asked what kind of modifications would make SCAMP boat suitable for space travel. ChatGPT suggested rocket engines, a life support system, a proper communication system and stronger materials, but in general considered it as an unpractical idea. :-)
Timo - Really sorry to hear you may not be able to launch your SCAMP into space. Maybe if the 6mm ply was increased to 9mm it would satisfy ChatGPT’s strength requirement? - Marty

Brilliant Alex, the Singularity isn't what we expected, but every bit as deadly for the human race.
It’s crazy how quickly people are accepting this. They don’t seem to care that it’s nothing original
Regression towards the mean…
Hilarious commentary Marty. Thank you for your "shallow draft"!
Glad to know we are still able to think for ourselves! Although my error rate might match ChatGPT, at least I'll be making "my" mistakes! Lol!

Marty, I'm with you. I am like the Peter Ustinov character in "Logan's Run", living in the past and loving every second of it!

What day is it and where am I?
Good stuff. Thanx.

Chat GPT sounds like those students who answer the teacher's question with an answer that is just the question formatted as a statement! LOL

Fun stuff, Marty. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Chuck; hope all is well at your end…Marty
Marty, keep generating your original contributions to the data base to interrupt that discursive loop.
AI is for Dummies.....or for people who are extremely bored!!
