Another Book Stack Plus Another New Boat
One more reader stack and a letter on a new design....
Another book stack arrived—this one from Bill Thompson. He writes:
“So many books to stack they kept falling over. I just stacked a few favorites in front of my bookcase.
The Arts of the Sailor and The Marlinspike Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith
These are a must-have because I like doing rope stuff.
Patriot Pirates by Robert H. Patton
This is a good read. It’s interesting and never dry. If you like history and the history of the sea, you’ll like this book.
The Sea Rover’s Practice by Benerson Little
Another good read about pirates
All the Hornblower books in the stack are great reads, but any or all of the Hornblower series. I’ve been reading and re-reading them all since I was 11 or so.
I snuck in the A&E DVDs of the Hornblower series because it’s truly great viewing. I would have included the Patrick O’Brien books, but I couldn’t find where I put them.
The Brotherhood of Pandora by David L Nichols
If you like Hornblower and O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series, then you will like The Brotherhood of Pandora. It’s my new favorite read.
Reader John Hughes writes: The most exciting new trailer sailer design I’ve seen (also difficult to get for us US sailors) is the Cygnet 20 by Bluewater out of Australia. By all accounts it’s a very capable sailer (both fast and secure when the wind picks up), fitted and finished with the highest quality standards, a cabin and cockpit design that seems to create room belying it’s 19’ 9” length, and - as far as mast raising - it doesn’t get any easier (this coming from a Com-Pac SunCat guy).
There has been one brought over to US waters (Finger Lakes in upstate New York) and when I had last spoken to the buyer he hadn’t yet sailed her (too much snow and ice) but was “over the top” about his driveway sailing expeditions.
If I wasn’t 70 years old with no desire to work I would contact them about being their US agent. Instead I contacted Gerry Hutchins at ComPac to suggest he do so because it would fit so well into his line (it even looks like a Com-PAC).
Anyway, check it out, I’m sure you’ll be as impressed as I was. •SCA•
Correction: Cygnet 20 is Australian not from New Zealand—Eds
The Cygnet 20 shows up in some recent episodes of "Sailing Kate Louise" on Youtube. It is indeed pretty and a speedy sailer.
