Ever since I took my daughter on a Rio Grande adventure a few years ago I’ve been promising my son I’d do something similar on the water with him as well. The Texas 200 seemed like a good choice, but my basketball coaching duties mostly rule out the month of June. Now we’re thinking we’d like to do 5 days on the water, or maybe more, somewhere around the third week of July.
So we thought we’d propose it to you all—trusted SCA readers: Where should we go? We’re open to anywhere in the lower 48. Maybe you’d like to join us for some small-boat fun? Have an extra boat we could use? Let us know your thoughts and maybe we’ll turn it into a poll to see where other small-boat folks want to meet and join in.
Some suggested parameters:
Anywhere in the lower 48 states. Maybe next year we’ll go worldwide.
Good small-boat waters. Some place with shallow water, good creek-crawling potential and maybe some beach camping?
Somewhere we can buy an old used boat, rent a boat or a borrow a boat.
We figure we’ll be sailing, but we’re open to other forms of propulsion.
Relatively uncrowded. We’d rather not face long lines at the ramp, or crowed anchorages if possible. If there are crowds, it would be better if it’s a bunch of small-boat sailors who chosen to join us.
A unique idea for a small-boat trip, or at least some interesting history or scenery. We like to take pictures and write articles after all.
A little hardship is okay, but we’d rather not die. My wife would kill me.
Preferably somewhere we haven’t already explored. Most of our time on the water has been on the West Coast, and a little bit in Florida and Texas, so there are plenty of places we’ve yet to see.
So where’s it going to be? Are we headed to one of the Great Lakes? To Louisiana for a romp in the swamp? Or closer to home—like a Montana lake or some Utah backwater? Down your local river or up some favorite tributary? Feel free to post your ideas and suggestions below. We’ll fetch our calendars and an atlas… •SCA•
The North Channel of Lake Huron. I live in FL but have found it to be the best small boat sailing area.
Since I'm always breaking rules, I'll suggest cruisingGeorgian Bay Josh! Not in the States but we are a "Friendly" nation up hear in Canada! You and McCoy could borrow my CROW! I have good knowledge of the area and would be happy to share the many beautiful spots to drop a hook or pull nose to shore, as I most often do! It would be great to meet face to face as well! All the best Roy
