Every epoxy brand has its loyal followers. The arguments for each indivudual brand are not always especially convincing, or at least can be countered with a real or perceived advantage of a differnt brand. The whole debate often ends up sounding like a Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge discussion, which is to say the “best” depends on what criteria you’re using and the personal preferences of the user.
Some builders stick with the brand they’ve “used forever,” others focus on value and the price per gallon—some choose based on a specific feature, like slow cure times or resistance to blushing. Based on our own experiences and informal surveys of other knowledgeable builders, we believe System Three Silvertip is the best boat-building epoxy you can buy.
While all of the popular boat-building epoxies are plenty strong and useful, consider the following virtues of System Three’s Silvertip and how this list compares to other brands:
Very clear finish
Will not blush
Fast wet-out, and also flows out well. Fill coats won’t tend to crater or bubble.
Higher heat resistance than most brands, which makes it better for post curing.
It’s a simple 2 to 1 ratio
And maybe the best feature for us backyard builders, Silvertip has an extended open time for recoating. You can recoat without sanding within 72 hours.
System Three has managed through chemistry to overcome most of the common issues or objections related to epoxy.
Anyway, we don’t offer paid advertising at SCA these days, but our friends at System Three were kind enough to send us a big box of goodies to give away as part of our Endless Boat-Related Stuff Giveaway™ program. So far we’ve handed out books, hats and clothing, handheld radios and an anchor. Let us know if there are any specific favorite products you’d like to see participating.
We’ll come back soon with some additional System Three products we know you’ll love.
Leave comment below to be entered in our giveaway contest for a 1.5 gallon kit of their Silvertip (fast speed).
Please note: Because of shipping considerations, only paid subscribers in the lower 48 states are eligible for this particular contest.
Have some epoxy needs of my own. Retired today, have some time
I have used a ridiculous number of different brands of epoxy over the years for many reasons, but often cost. System 3 has been great as have many others. My one piece of advice for any builder is to use a digital scale to measure out your epoxy and hardner (use grams). This is the most precise way to measure and eliminate the need for calibrated pumps or containers. This has made my life so much easier weather I'm building sailboats, paddlecrat, or surfboards. The added benefit is the ability to reuse food containers one last time before the end up in the trash
