Description: O’Day SPRITE: 10’-2” LOA, 4’-9” beam. The build plate indicates that it was produced by “MARSCOT PLASTICS INC. Fall River, Mass for G.D. O’DAY ASSOCIATES Hull No. 2460 Class No. S[prite]197.” According to Daniel Spurr (in Heart of Glass), Marscot was established in the early 1950s by Palmer Scott, a wooden boatbuilder who was one of the earliest to work with the then-emerging fiberglass-resin and molding technologies. O’Day subsequently bought Marscot in 1958 to produce his boats. Although many O’Day trailerable boats were subsequently designed by Uffa Fox, the earlier Sprite came from Robert Baker’s drawing board.
This plastic classic is complete with wooden mast, wooden boom (later versions of the Sprite and Super Sprite have aluminum spars), and the original E.W. Smith (Fairhaven, Mass) sails in very good condition. It has two mast steps so that it can be rigged as a sloop with a 47 sq-ft mainsail and 16 sq-ft jib, or as a more docile cat boat (O’Day Sprite Sail Plan.pdf). The gelcoat and paint are original and unmolested. This boat needs some TLC and a rudder, but the rotted transom has already been replaced. It’s been stored inside since I rescued it from an English ivy patch, and it deserves a new owner who will finish the restoration and get her back out on the water. No trailer.
