Artist Tom Crestodina began making cutaway drawings in 2011 to connect with his young son Franio while Tom was at sea fishing in Alaska. On his website he writes:
"When I went back to fishing for the first time after my son was born, I missed my family so much it was like physical pain. Any father who has been to sea knows that feeling. Making these drawings was my way of dealing with it, and reaching out to my little boy."
His art and books are popular with kids of course, but when we stumbled upon them we were transfixed. For anyone who’s wondered exactly what goes on inside working boats, Tom’s inimitable, buoyant drawings will both answer your questions and put a smile on your face.
We asked Tom if he’d share a selection of his drawings with SCA readers, and he agreed. In addition to showing us the art below he has kindly donated a SIGNED copy of his fabulous book Working Boats: An Inside Look at Ten Amazing Watercraft that we will give away to one lucky reader. Just write “interested” in the comments below to be entered in the drawing. (Congrats to John Kohnen, winner. 4/20 -Eds)
Meanwhile, if you’re interested in the inner workings of various watercraft or would like to give a special gift to a young person, you can order your copy of Tom’s hardbound book here. He also offers t-shirts, posters and other unique products for sale at his site.—Eds
