The waters of the great inland ocean that is Gichigamiing or Lake Superior have been famously praised in poetry by Longfellow, sung of by Gordon Lightfoot, filmed by Bill Mason (Waterwalker, NFB) and painted by the Group of Seven. They have also exerted their spell over those who take to sea in boats of all kinds. For a few years we have contemplated sailing out from the village of Rossport, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Superior to Battle Island, to overnight at the beach campsite and explore the historic lighthouse. Scott had previously visited the site in a 15 person voyageur canoe and formed a plan for us to go again, this time in our two Scamp sailboats (Stout #146 and Stanley-T. #250)
