It was night and I had just fallen asleep in my forward v-bunk, alone in my 20-foot sloop Persistence tied up securely against harbor pilings. I awoke in darkness—my sloop was pitching about, yanked forward and then shoved back.
Suddenly, I heard a dreadful hammering sound. Wham! The blow vibrated through the entire wood-epoxy hull.
My adrenalized heart started pounding. Had another boat rammed into me? Maybe waterfront thieves or marauders had come alongside, preparing to board?
