It’s a late September evening on The Big Lake. Although many small boat skippers have tucked away their craft for the winter, our three Montgomery sailboat crews are rafted together, enjoying postcard scenery in an empty anchorage well protected from the south, downright sultry breeze.
The place: Raspberry Bay, just outside of Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and four miles across from Raspberry Island and its beautiful 19th century lighthouse. This warm, clear evening was only part of our reward for making the late-season trek to this out-of-the-way “north-coast” paradise. Our four-day cruise had plenty more fun in store.
