Ken Van Camp: In April 2016, I trailered my Islands 19 to the Nanticoke Harbor Marina in Maryland, and set sail on a solo 3-day-weekend excursion on the Nanticoke River. I spent the first night in Tedious Creek on Hog Island, and on the second day I was sailing the open water near the confluence of the Nanticoke and Wicomico Rivers when I came upon a pod of dolphins. Three of them broke off from the pod and followed my boat for more than 15 minutes. The attached photo shows just how close astern they were following me, and in a low-freeboard boat like the Islands 19 it was especially exciting.Mathew Lane: (ABOVE) Eleanor, my Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC) Passagemaker dinghy, sailing on Lake Chicot in Southwest Louisiana. Herman’s Sun Cat 17 Muddy Duck pictured in Photo Flood PT 3. Jack, now in his 7th decade, is a true-believer in the simplicity and safety of a lateen rigged vessel, especially for “older” skippers that sail solo. Jack currently sails out of Birch Bay, WA.Karl Brohan: Me in my Chesapeake 17 kayak on Lake Crescent in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I built the boat back in the 90’s with a light layer of epoxy filled glass then rubbed it out for thebright finish. It is a nice roomy boat and stable enough to park the paddle on its leash in the water and eat lunch. •SCA•Small Craft Advisor is a reader-supported publication. I would like to know more about Jack L’s lanteen rig for the Sun Cat 17. What is the sail area? Is it larger than the gaff rig? Is there a way to reef? How does the boat handle in comparison to the stock gaff rig...
Ok Kitrick Nielson, what kind of boat is that and what is the story with the glass bottle hanging from the boom?!
