Reader John Shepard shared this recap on his latest project: “SV Hadley is # 21 of 120 Cal 35 Cruisers built in 1973-1974. I acquired her in 2015, and between occasional cruises in Pacific NW waters I have been refitting her for more extensive adventures. She has all new sails, standing, running rigging and mast hardware. New anchor/windlass systems. New AC/DC panels and water heater. AIS/VHF Radio systems. Year 2022 was a no sailing year, used to rebuild the Perkins 4.107 diesel and V-Drive transmission. She spent 2 month on the hard in 2023 getting new bottom paint, through hulls, Prop shaft, Coupler, and dripless Shaft Seal installed. Just finished the end of June with the install of her engine and transmission. Now back in the water, preparations are being made for sea trials and outfitting for the second half of the 2023 cruising season. “
Alexandra Forbes writes: “I built this this 16 ft ultralight dory to be able to paddle, row or sail. She is very tender as a sailboat and not very stable. But, I am able to out maneuver other, faster boats in friendly games of sponge tag on flat water.
I built her with a number of different woods: mahogany, apple crotch, ash, oak, spruce, teak, curly maple, African mahogany plywood from Isreal and white eastern cedar. “
Speaking of artistic talents, Alex is also a carving teacher. See image below.
Jim Kemp built not one, but two CLC kit boats. He writes: “I set aside a month to build the canoe, but it went so fast I decided to build the little pram as well. Each is about 30 pounds and very easy to cartop. Thanks for a great magazine.”
Speaking of CLC kits, Martin Lade is making progress on a Pocketship. “You can follow my build at Youtube (german language). I spent about 250 hours so far, approximately 30 hours of sanding.
I bought the plans from Berger Boote in Germany, my location is in the Country Saarland, southwest Germany, about 50 km north of France and 50 km east of Luxembourg.
When I'm asked when I'll be done I tell people: Easter. But I don't say what year!”
