Some years back when I was running Duckworks Boat Builders Supply concurrent with Small Craft Advisor, I decided I wanted to add a line of anchors to the Duckworks offerings—but which brand or type?
Initial research indicated the new spade-style anchors with roll bars were outperforming most anchors in most conditions, but we dug a little deeper (no pun intended), reading and watching numerous comparison studies and videos. Finally, we polled our own readers to get their feedback as part of Marty Loken’s feature article on the subject.
Although our readers still seem to be slowly transitioning from common styles like the Danforth, the strongest testimonials came from those with the new roll bar types, and the various studies and videos seemed unequivocal—these newer spade-style roll-bar anchors were a huge step forward. We reached out to Mantus and became a dealer.
Since that time I’ve used a Mantus anchor on my boats with great results and heard from countless friends and customers who’ve noted similarly impressive performance. Mantus has also compiled a trove of video evidence supporting their design—see it here.
Although we don’t have sponsors or advertisers at Small Craft Advisor, just like we’ve done with books, radios, and other gear, we like to promote products we appreciate, and even better—offer free prizes to our loyal readers. With that in mind, the good people over at Mantus have offered one lucky SCA reader a free Mantus M1 anchor (your choice of 8 lb or 12 lb version). If you’re interested, just leave a comment below and we’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner. Good luck. —Eds
Would like to join the drawing for a Mantus. Question - is the bail, or roll bar, removable for storage? Later edit - just read below that the bail is removable.
Congrats to reader Red O'Leary, whose comment was selected at random as the winner of the Mantus anchor! Thank you to everyone for participating and reading. Several exciting giveaways coming soon.—Eds
