Many of you have followed the amazing career of Roger Barnes, small-boat cruiser, author of the successful book, Dinghy Cruising Companion, president of the fast-growing Dinghy Cruising Association, and producer of more than 80 information-packed videos on his adventures.
What you may not know is that the DCA, despite being strongly associated with the United Kingdom, has expanded to other countries, including the U.S., which now boasts three DCA chapters: Northeast, welcoming members from New England and Eastern Canada; Pacific Northwest, with members from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Alaska; and Wisconsin, welcoming members from that state along with Minnesota, Illinois and Manitoba.
Together, the North American chapters of the Dinghy Cruising Association are working hard to get Roger Barnes to the U.S. this summer (his first visit ever to North America) to take part in the annual Wooden Boat Show in Mystic, CT, and to join in some small-boat cruises in our country. He hopes to spend a full month in the U.S., but he’ll need some help from fellow small-craft nuts in order to make the U.S. trip.
Namely, Roger will need some funding, since he isn’t a wealthy man and his hoped-for U.S. visit isn’t being underwritten by corporations or other big-bucks sources.
Roger needs our help, so I’m asking you as a Small Craft Advisor reader—and as someone who should consider joining one of the North American DCA chapters—to make a small donation via this Go Fund Me link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-sailor-and-author-roger-barnes-visit-the-usa?attribution_id=sl:83d84d48-3406-4898-8008-1422234f7c19&lang=en_US&utm_campaign=man_sharesheet_dash&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link
Our funding goal is relatively modest as these things go: $3,500, of which we’ve so far raised $1,625.
If we can hit our target amount, we’ll be able to get Roger to the East Coast, to participate in the Wooden Boat Show (likely as a guest speaker), and to take part in a few small-boat cruises. (If we exceed the $3,500 goal, we might be able to help Roger visit other parts of the U.S. this summer, to enjoy small-boat cruising in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest or other areas beyond his first stop in the Northeast. And we’ll hope to get him back again the following year, so he can take part in more small-boat events across North America.)
What’s in it for you as a reader of Small Craft Advisor? For one thing, if we can help in our way to bring Roger Barnes to North America—something he’s genuinely excited about—we’ll plan to cover his small-boat cruises, encouraging him to write about his North American adventures for SCA, and he’ll be warmly invited to take part in events directly supported by Small Craft Advisor like the big, annual Small Boat Festival at Port Ludlow Marina, near Port Townsend.
