It’s easy to say “Ain’t nothin’ to it”—but often not so easy “to do it.” I can remember now, with a clarity that brings a shiver up my back and the hair on my arms standing on end, when I first confronted the determination needed “to do it.”
I lived on my Cal 32, in Sausalito, California. Moorage was cheeper than an apartment, a necessity now that I was divorced. At 33, life was ahead of me,including a new lady. A popular song, “If I were a carpenter, would you marry me anyway?” was on the air waves. Everything demanded my time: my construction job, my new relationship, and most important, weekend visits with my young daughter. There was no time to sail.
