Another option for figuring out the shape of your edge is to use a contour gauge. That way one can get the shape on the first try.

I’ve made successful dado cuts with my chop saw. Limit the depth of cut and make multiple cuts. The material will need to be spaced off the gate so the blade can make a full level cut. Practice on some scrap…

Another method of supporting the step is to epoxy glue/screw strips of the same material as the sides and step onto the sides to support the step.
