Don’t be embarrassed—we’ve all got them…that is, stacks of nautical books on bedside tables or taking up space on shelves and countertops. Below are a couple of photos readers sent over. —Eds
Reader and author Alex Zimmerman sent the photo above. He wrote: “The reason my own book is on top is not shameless self-promotion (well, perhaps indirectly), but is because I gave a presentation about it last week, and I had it out to refresh my memory on what I wrote.”
Well, Alex, your Becoming Coastal is well worth promoting. “An absorbing account of his 25 years exploring British Columbia’s vast coastline…” And we do have a few copies in stock.
Cruise of the Kate looks intriguing—about a guy who builds a 23-foot boat and sets off to circumnavigate England.
Fair Wind and Plenty of It sounds like one worth reading just for the wonderful title. Apparently a modern tall ship adventure.
Norm Thibeault’s stack looks a lot like our own—plenty of small-boat reading! The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow is an SCA reader favorite about a grand Mirror dinghy voyage of “4,900 kilometers over salt and fresh water, under sail, at oars, or at the end of a tow rope - through twelve countries, 282 locks, and numerous trials and adventures, including an encounter with Balkan pirates.”
If it wasn’t obvious Norm has especially fine taste, his stack includes our Small Boats Big Adventure book of interviews.
Roger Barnes’ Dinghy Cruising Companion is an absolute must-have for small-boat camp-cruisers, as is Ida Little and Michael Walsh’s classic Beachcruising and Coastal Camping.
Our friend Paul Butler’s Upgrading Your Small Sailboat for Cruising is full of hard-won, practical advice—and Marya’s gorgeous drawings.
Roving in Open Boats? How did I miss this one all these years. Must buy a used copy at once.
More stacks coming soon. Want to share yours? Send a photo to josh@smallcraftadvisor.com —Eds
Me thinks “Jack De Crow”, “Jagular Goes Everywhere”, “Constant Waterman” would top my stack! PS…no photo for you Josh, since I am camped just down the road a piece from you in the snow in my Kimbo Camper!!!…Dan
I’m pleased of course to see Michael’s and my book Beachcruising and Coastal Camping on any and all shelves. We wrote it in hopes of inspiring others to get out and live the life. That was and is a good one. See you in the water. Ida
