The second annual Small Boat Festival took place May 31 at Port Ludlow Marina, south of Port Townsend, WA…and some of us might have been hoarse by the end, having talked too much about each others’ boats. So, a good time was had by all!
The event is organized by the Pacific Northwest Pocket Yachters (www.pocketyachters.com), and primary sponsors are Gig Harbor Boat Works, Duckworks Boat Builders Supply, Small Craft Advisor magazine, and Glen-L Marine Designs. Co-sponsors are the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, the Northwest Maritime Center, the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Dinghy Cruising Association, the Center for Wooden Boats, and the Gig Harbor BoatShop.
You want photos, not more talk, so let’s get straight to images…all by the author.
(P.S.— knowing you can never get too many images of small boats, check out the photos also posted this morning, “Small Boat Festival Gallery,” by Nathan Lunstrom, who brought his nice Nimble 20 to the SBF and, as a bonus, shot some really nice photos of the event. Thanks, Nathan!)
Among boats displayed ashore was EBB, Tom Regan’s fast, slenderized version of a 16-foot Lake George Boat, weighing in at just under 100 lbs. Here, Tom talks about rowing boats in general, how he built EBB using 4mm Okoume planks and delicate-looking Alaska Yellow Cedar frames on 6-inch centers…all to produce a pulling boat that’s only 60% the weight of a stock Lake George Boat. (Now officially retired from his years as proprietor of Grapeview Point Boat Works, Tom continues to spend Saturdays instructing others at the non-profit Gig Harbor BoatShop.)
