Congrats to our friends at Gig Harbor Boat Works on the release of their updated Lobster Boat. This is the do-everything boat that we reviewed back in issue number 48, and it even listed in our “12 Best” feature years later.
Here is a link to their update.
You can play around with their 3D drawing of the new version yourself here.
Regarding our recent Notes on Anchoring article, reader Toni Hodgkins wrote:
You need a certain amount of needs in an anchor system—the chain size, the anchor size, the type of anchor, the weight of the vessel, the length of the vessel—then the anchoring ground and wind conditions. That's why Rocna anchors asks for size of vessel, weight of vessel, and the conditions. The anchor size is your choice, but why risk a £200000 yacht on the wrong anchor and smaller chain to save money. Look at any marina and you’ll see too-small anchors on expensive yachts.
David Peebles shared these thoughts:
I’ve been told that CQR is what you get if you pronounce it S e C u R e. I used a 15- pounder with my little 21-foot 5000-pound cutter. I’ve always felt “secure” at anchor with that CQR—even during some pretty good blows. Sometimes I had to put out a stern anchor to prevent the boat from sailing back and forth. Used a Danforth type for that.
Reader Rick Pratt added:
And make sure it is ready to deploy without fuss. Critically important. Practice. It might literally save your life.
About Kitrick Nielson’s article Suffering Spontaneity’s Consequences, reader Michael Neilsen comments:
The desert is a powerful draw and the lower Colorado seems inviting. Just keep in mind that the desert can kill you in pretty short order.

Years ago I conjured up a houseboat design that could negotiate a bit of rough water and get up on plane with about 50 hp and be quite handy at a campsite. Then the MacGregor 26X came along and added sailing to the mix and my camper/boat went on the far back burner. Now that sailing is becoming too difficult to bother with, that houseboat looks good again!
I have built one of all categories, but for the Trailerable Powercruisers. And I'd like to one of those too, if that doesn't make me sound too selfish! Lol! We most use our Mini houseboat, DIANNE'S ROSE though, so I was cheering for the Mini Houseboat option! AllthebestRoy
